How Dr. Andrew Jacono Rebuilds Faces After Domestic Abuse

Facial injuries from domestic violence rarely heal on their own. For more than 100 survivors, Dr. Andrew Jacono has provided the reconstructive surgery needed to repair that damage, working through the FACE TO FACE project run by the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, where he serves as senior advisor.

The program supplies pro bono surgical care to people whose faces carry visible reminders of abuse, and Dr. Andrew Jacono has treated it as a core part of his surgical career rather than a side project separate from his Park Avenue cosmetic practice.

National Television Attention

His efforts reached a wide audience through Facing Trauma, a documentary series that aired in 2011 on Discovery Fit & Health before later appearing on the Oprah Winfrey Network. Episodes followed Dr. Jacono performing reconstructive procedures for domestic violence survivors, pairing surgical detail with the emotional process of reclaiming a sense of self.

Facial disfigurement caused by abuse does more than change appearance. It can complicate job prospects, invite unwanted attention, and serve as a lasting visual marker of trauma. Reconstructive surgery gives survivors a way to move past that marker.

Recognition followed the work. The Center for the Women of New York honored Dr. Jacono with a Good Guy Award in 2006 for his advocacy and pro bono contributions, and U.S. Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy commended him in the Congressional Record for his surgical and charitable service to women.

For nine years, Dr. Jacono chaired ABOUT FACE: MAKING CHANGES, an annual benefit supporting survivors of domestic violence. That sustained involvement, spanning television, advocacy, and direct patient care, has made him one of the more visible surgeons working at the intersection of reconstructive medicine and domestic violence recovery, a role that continues alongside his international missions treating children with facial deformities in countries such as Ecuador and Vietnam.
