Where the magic happens

Judd Zebersky Steps Down After Building Jazwares Into Toy Giant

Judd Zebersky stepped down as CEO of Jazwares on March 20, 2026, ending a tenure that transformed a startup he launched after leaving his law practice into one of the toy industry’s most widely distributed companies. Chief Operating Officer David Neustein, who spent 14 years at the company, assumed the chief executive role three days later.

The transition closed a chapter that began in 1997 when Judd Zebersky, a University of Miami law school graduate, flew to China to learn toy manufacturing firsthand. He had no factory background and no roadmap. What he had was willingness to learn. For months, he moved through manufacturing facilities in rural parts of the country, absorbing production methods across multiple disciplines including blow molding, rotocasting, and hair rooting techniques.

Squishmallows and the Power of a Brand

Jazwares built its early revenue base through licensed toy lines tied to major entertainment properties. Agreements with Minecraft, Sonic the Hedgehog, and Fortnite gave the company a reliable sales foundation. The acquisition of Kellytoy in 2020 shifted the trajectory. Kellytoy’s Squishmallows line, featuring plush toys with individual names, birthdays, and origin stories, became a social media phenomenon. TikTok amplified the brand’s reach significantly, drawing fans including Lady Gaga and Kim Kardashian. More than 100 million units sold in a single year. Individual units retailed between five and thirty dollars.

Investor Partnership and Awards

Alleghany Capital Corporation entered the picture in 2014 with an initial stake and followed with a majority interest in 2016. Berkshire Hathaway absorbed the investment through its 2022 acquisition of Alleghany. Founder control over daily operations was preserved throughout both transactions. At the time of his departure, Judd Zebersky left behind a company employing approximately 1,400 people, operating across more than 100 countries, and recognized by TIME, Fast Company, and Fortune for workplace quality and industry influence.
